There is a connection of extraordinary vibrations that arrive here and make an impact for us to pay attention to and he is one. He is a part of what makes us up along with the universe, perhaps one of the stars in the galaxy flickering in Mississippi.
His work was present in my discovery of self in witnessing awareness of his presence in culture and in our homes particularlly during the holidays with family and neighbors during the launch of hip hop landing on television and in music videos. Basquiat’s work feels like artifact messaging to be heard and finally seen. Thank you Jean Michel for believing regardless of how they looked at you or wanted or needed you to be prior to open doors. He found himself in freedom without barriers. Freedom and fearlessness forces the world to take notice and accept the uniqueness without insecurity or judgement. He has opened space for marginalized creatives, social justice, African and American history in a country that continues to ignore what they consider useless eaters.
“Jean-Michel Basquiat : King Pleasure” will feature over 200 paintings and art curated by the Basquiat family. World renouned Architect Sir David Adjaye OBE and Basquiat’s stepmother Nora Fitzpatrick are serving as exhibition designers.
It all happens at the Starrett-Lehigh Building in Chelsea, New York City. The exhibition will feature life of his childhood in Brooklyn and Puerto Rico through to the Palladium’s VIP recreation that features two of his paintings back in 1985.
The exhibition is titled from a 1987 painting in which he painted and named after the jazz vocalist King Pleasure, “Moody’s Mood for Love”which was beloved by his father, Gerard. Mr. Gerard Basquiat led the Estate until his passing in 2013.
This particular exhibition encompasses the vision of his family by lending the perspective of his loved ones. It will depict all stages of his life.

The art world made Basquiat’s work into a luxury brand. This September, Tiffany & Co., released an advertisement “About Love” campaign fronted by Beyonce and Jay-Z based on his 1982 painting Equals Pi.It is a four foot wood cabinet filled with the designer’s wear’s. The centrepiece goes for $150,000.00 and is available in limited supply.
Steven Torton, Basquiat’s former assistant is terrified by the Tiffany & Co. commoditization and exploitation of his work as thinking Tiffany & Co. probably would not have allowed Jean- Michel to use the restroom. Steven told The Daily Beast that Basquiat was often refused cabs even with a wad of cash in hand.
We are excited about this upcoming exhibition. We anticipate a reckoning that will lend a voice to the legacy of his creativity and genius. We want to encourage you to explore why and how he sent shock waves not only here but internationally. He ensured exposure to people normally unseen or hidden. He was hugely ambitious and middle class despite what was assumed by most.
